The *Current* Purpose of Therapy.
The world feels gross right now. I don’t really know how else to describe it.
My clients are having a hard time managing their own lives on top of the eerie state of the world.
Everything is expensive.
People do not seem to be very kind.
Artificial Intelligence and the internet are everywhere.
No one can remember the last time they felt peace, presence, and privacy.
Nothing feels genuine or purposeful.
So, where in the hell do we even begin with therapy?
How do we, as therapists, help our clients when everything feels “off?”
Frankly, my clients are right.
Everything feels wrong right now.
What is our role? How do we sit with their burdens?
Well, we do just exactly that.
One of my clients said it best: I do not have anyone in my life who I can just talk to about whatever is going on with me. That is why I come.
That. Is. Huge.
Whether you believe it or not, utilizing this space for 50 minutes - once every week, or every other week - can be powerful for your burnout and mental wellness.
Now remember, it is not that therapy is just talking (click and read more), it’s that we need somewhere to untangle our minds and rest the weight that has been on our head and shoulders. We need somewhere that we can breathe non-judgmentally. We need somewhere where we can say “what the actual fuck?” - (Cue my session today with a client where we said that exact phrase).
So, therapy right now is just that.
The world is really, really hard right now.
As a mental health professional, we’ve got you. We will help untangle some of the excess so you can function with more ease.
Therapy is quite literally one of the only jobs where you cannot necessarily provide VISUAL progress being made to the client, however if you (as the client) focus on more on how you feel, interact, and cope, the evidence is right there. We help our clients recognize, allow & accept, investigate & inquire, nurture & not judge. None of those are seen. They are felt. They are witnessed.
Bring your most vulnerable self into our office. Everyone else on the outside is losing it - it would be great to learn how to cope so that doesn’t happen to you, too.
We will help you find that sense of control. In a world where control does not feel like ours.
And, while you are at it, if you feel inclined one day, let’s go deeper into your mind and work on some of those tougher things you have been sweeping under your rug.
But, for now, if surface level is all you can handle, we can work on that, too.
Reach out, I’ve got your back.
